Sabah Chronicles: Kundasang War Memorial

Kundasang War Memorial is one of the places to visit if you are in Kundasang. This war memorial is dedicated to the British and Australian solders who lost their lives in the Sandakan POW camps during their death marches to Ranau. Not only that, this memorial also recognizes the suffering and  sacrifices of the native population of Sabah. Source: Wikipedia

Entrance

Once you walked up the stairs, you will arrive here.

Here, all the history and background of this Kundasang War Memorial is being displayed through photographs, newspaper cuttings and letters.

We made our way to the Australian Garden.

From there, we went to the English Rose Garden. I did not take many pictures here.

Next, was the Borneo Garden.

I love stone walls!

The stone walls lead to the Contemplation Garden.  We spent quite some time here.

In this garden, marble panels with all the names of the soldiers who perished are listed here. As I stood there looking through the names, I noticed that there were soldiers who were brothers, some twins, some triplets and some father & son. At that moment, I felt the pain of the mothers, sisters and wives of those soldiers who perished.

At the end of this garden, there is a place that we could see the view of Kundasang.

Took more photos on the way down.

I would really recommend visiting this place if you are in Kundasang.
